چکیده

Insecticide resistance is an ever escalating problem worldwide in many pest populations and numerous cases of insecticide resistance are polygenic. Therefore, it is important to investigate the types of interactions that occur between insecticide resistance loci as this will dictate the level of resistance (and effectiveness of a chemical control strategy). Interactions also play a role in the evolution and/or maintenance of multigenic resistance in the field. Given that a limited number of mechanisms confer resistance, it might be possible to establish general rules for interactions between mechanisms. Several variables might dictate the type of interaction, such as the nature of the resistance mechanisms, genotype, etc. Interactions can be synergistic, antagonistic or additive. Based on this literature review, the most common interaction of multiple homozygous resistance loci is synergistic and additive when loci are heterozygous. When one locus is homozygous and the other locus is heterozygous the most common interaction was synergistic, although very few studies have examined this type of interaction. Possible factors that drive these interactions, exceptions to the trends, and future research needs are discussed. 2009 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Multiplicative interaction between the two major mechanisms of permethrin resistance, kdr and cytochrome P450-monooxygenase detoxification, in mosquitoes.

Epistasis is the nonadditive interaction between different loci which contribute to a phenotype. Epistasis between independent loci conferring insecticide resistance is important to investigate as this phenomenon can shape the rate that resistance evolves and can dictate the level of resistance in the field. The evolution of insecticide resistance in mosquitoes is a growing and world-wide probl...

Evidence for genetic hitchhiking effect associated with insecticide resistance in Aedes aegypti.

Information on genetic variation within and between populations is critical for understanding the evolutionary history of mosquito populations and disease epidemiology. Previous studies with Drosophila suggest that genetic variation of selectively neutral loci in a large fraction of genome may be constrained by fixation of advantageous mutations associated with hitchhiking effect. This study ex...

Outcome of Patients with Cholinergic Insecticide Poisoning Treated with Gastric Lavage: A Prospective Observational Cohort Study

Background: Gastric lavage (GL) is one of the most commonly used decontamination method for cholinergic insecticide ingestion in developing countries despite lack of supporting evidence. This study was designed to evaluate the outcome of patients with cholinergic insecticide poisoning treated with GL in regards to timing and frequency of the procedure. Methods: In this prospective observational...

High Wolbachia density correlates with cost of infection for insecticide resistant Culex pipiens mosquitoes.

In the mosquito Culex pipiens, insecticide resistance genes alter many life-history traits and incur a fitness cost. Resistance to organophosphate insecticides involves two loci, with each locus coding for a different mechanism of resistance (degradation vs. insensitivity to insecticides). The density of intracellular Wolbachia bacteria has been found to be higher in resistant mosquitoes, regar...

Phorate can reverse P450 metabolism-based herbicide resistance in Lolium rigidum.

BACKGROUND Organophosphate insecticides can inhibit specific cytochrome P450 enzymes involved in metabolic herbicide resistance mechanisms, leading to synergistic interactions between the insecticide and the herbicide. In this study we report synergistic versus antagonistic interactions between the organophosphate insecticide phorate and five different herbicides observed in a population of mul...
